It has been established that a shaft crack has an important effect on the dynamic behavior of a rotor-bearing system. To identify the location and size of the shaft crack, an inverse problem method is proposed in this paper. This method regards the identification of the shaft crack as an inverse problem and formulates this problem as an optimization problem by means of the finite element method, then utilizes the genetic algorithm to search the solution, and the searched solution is just the location and configuration of the crack. Numerical experiments suggest that good predictions of the shaft crack locations and configuration are possible and the proposed method is feasible. The study also indicates that the proposed method has the potential to solve a wide range of the inverse identification problems in a systematic and robust way
