Dynamic Behaviour and Passive Seismic Control of the Rion Bridge

The Rion-Antirion Bridge, a cable-stayed bridge with three main spans built in the highly seismic environment of the Gulf of Corinth in Greece, is studied to evaluate its general dynamic properties and the response to earthquake motion. A three-dimensional Finite Element model was employed to perform modal analyses and transient nonlinear analyses of the dynamic behaviour under various earthquake scenarios. Parametric studies focussed on various possible deck configurations. A free and a fixed deck configuration were analysed first and then studies on feasible damping devices for energy dissipation performed. The different solutions are judged within a framework of acceptance criteria, based on structural and geotechnical considerations. The influence of isolation devices is found to be favourable for all criteria considered. They provide intermediate solutions, and enable the system performance to be adjusted by the selection of particular isolator properties.
