Prevention methods of water hammer in building water-supply systems

Water hammer appearance and its harm were expounded. It is common event for water hammer to occur in pump station (include town district pump station, raise pressure pump station). Moreover, high-level buildings are high in height and pumping head, water hammer often happen at pump station and in water supply systems. The conditions of probable to produce water hammer were induced. The higher in pumping head and the longer in water supply line and the bigger at water flow velocity, the more probably the water hammer to happen. Prevention methods of water hammer at stopping pump and in building water-supply systems were summarized. There are many ways to prevent Water hammer or surge at pump station and in water supply systems. Most of prevention methods of water hammer are to decrease surge-raising pressure and protect pump station equipment and water supply systems. In important or complex water supply systems, composite methods would be adopted to enhance the reliability of prevention ability. The factors to be considered in selection of water hammer prevention methods were suggested and explained by giving examples.
