Produce magnesium metal and magnesium alloys of highest quality at lowest cost; Eliminate an environmentally hazardous waste, the Woodsreef tailings dump; Generate power for the refinery and supply to the regional grid in the most environmentally friendly way possible and at lowest cost to facilitate other regional industry developments; Provide the metal and alloying capabilities to ally with the existing aluminium producers in New South Wales, initiating potential for a new manufacturing base; Introduce magnesium casting expertise to the region to produce cast and other formed components for transport, electronics and other end users, to provide the maximum added value within the State of New South Wales. Provide new long-term employment opportunities for the local, rurally depressed, Barraba area (350 employees in the refinery alone), and the Newcastle region; Minimise greenhouse gas emissions through the use of no CO_2 serpentinite feedstock (compared with 308,000tpa for AMC increasing to 1,232,000tpa, and 273,000tpa for SAMAG, for mining, transportation and leaching); Minimise energy usage through refinery process technology selection and improvements, in alloying from GTR's R&D programs, and state of the art power generation.
