Magnesium high pressure die casting offers unique properties that can be capitilised for the benefit of the whole supply chain (cost, quality, integration of parts, die life). However, these benefits can only be realised by utilizing these unique properties in an optimum way and this commences with the design phase. This paper has highlighted the importance of The ability of cast long, thin and complex parts. The reduced energy costs when casting magnesium. The major reduction in weight possible. The minor infrastructure costs needed to cast magnesium. Magnesium castings are being used successfully in aeronautical, rail and automotive applications. This combined with legislative, fuel efficiency and manufacturing cost requirements will ensure the current growth rate will be maintained into the future.
