The design and evaluation is described of a special test-rig for evaluating the uncertainties of location between the probe tip of an industrial gauge and typical target surfaces. The system will resolve variations to better than 10 nm over a range of forces. There are indications that uncertainties from contact may be significant contributors to error budgets, even when using clean surfaces.
