This article reviews the possibilities, potential obstacles, and possible solutions associated with the application of heterogeneous photocatalysis (HPC) to the remediation of atmospheric pollutants, especially those implicated in the global warming phenomenon. The following topics are briefly considered in turn in what follows: (a) process fundamentals and background; (b) photocatalyst materials; (c) progress made to date on the use of TiO_2-based photocatalysis for the treatment of CO_2, NO_x, SO_x, and other greenhouse gases; (d) implications of oxide-based photocatalytic phenomena in natural processes; and (e) future directions.
