The electrochemical and photoelectrochemical reduction of CO_2 have been investigated continuously for the past several decades, with some impressive results being obtained. With the increasing seriousness of the challenge of global warming, it is necessary to consider the next steps in the development of working technology. Our recent work shows that it is possible to achieve respectable efficiencies for the simultaneous production of syngas and oxygen in a flat electrolysis cell employing a gas diffusion cathode.
