Among the divalent rare earth ions doped in RPO_4 (R = Y,Gd or La), Tb~(3+), Sm~(3+) and Dy~(3+) can emit visible luminescence of relatively high intensity by excitation in either a 4f-5d or a charge transfer band by 172nm light. In GdPO_4, energy transfer occurs from Pr~(3+), Nd~(3+), Er~(3+) or Tm~(3+) to Gd~(3+) producing 312nm line emission by 172nm light excitation. Energy transfer from Gd~(3+) to Dy~(3+) is also observed, leading to the visible luminescence characteristic of Dy~(3+). A combination of these two types of energy transfer may lead to efficieny conversion of 172nm light to visible light.
