Optimum Efficiency of Multi-Stage Heat Engines Including Heat Leak

The overall efficiency of a cascaded heat engine exceeds that of its component engines. A more realistic model includes stage-wise heat leak, which results in a reduction in the expected improvement. Generalized expressions that show the contribution of heat leak are developed. Several variations on heat leak modeling are presented and simple prescriptions for optimum performance with heat leak are given.
