Advances in headbox technology, like most technology based systems, are progressing at an ever increasing pace. This may be in part due tot he computer revolution but also overall paper production increases. Certain critical events have strongly influenced headbox evolution including the addition of an air pad on open headboxes, the first hydraulic headbox, the introduction of the gap former, stratification, closed loop control of CD basis weight, and most recently, the introduction of consistency profiling.
