Shape optimization and optimal control techniques are developed for numerical control of paper machine headbox flows. For a specific headbox device and its components or flow conditions to be improved, the related optimization problem is mathematically formulated and numerically solved. The resulting in-house software for the control of headbox flows is based on a numerical headbox model, that has been verified by measurements, and modern optimization methods. The approach is illustrated by two industrially nontrivial examples: shape optimizationo f a tapered header and control optimization of slice channel flows, including numerical examples of both conventional slice bar control and dilution control headboxes.
