Al-Pac Forest Products Inc. optimized its recovery boiler by increasing the as-fired liquor solids target from 73percent to 80percent and installing an in-house recovery boiler control package. Evaporator pluggage was eliminated by minimizing the calcium and fibre contents in black liquor as well as increasing the degree of turbulence int eh concentrator distribution tray. Potential liquor handling problems were resolved by keeping the liquor flowrate int he liquor/ash/dust system as high as possible. Mechanical carryover int he recovery boiler was minimized by optimizng the liquor firing program and combustion air system. As a result, the thermal efficiency increased by over 6percent and the reduction efficiency was up by 0.6percent. The control of green liquor TTA and dregs content improved significantly. On the environmental side, both sulphur dioxide and particulate emissions were slightly reduced. All of these achievements were made with no capital expenditures.
