This paper presents the feasibility study of using magnetorheological (MR) dampers on bicycles. The design of a MR damper for semi-active vibration control of an off-road bicycle is first described. A prototype MR damper is fabricated and performance tests are carried out. Experimental results show that the MR damper has very good performance in the working range. Initial road test shows that with the MR damper it is very easy to control the damping force during riding. However, the maximum damping force does not meet the requirement for a bicycle. Further modification will be necessary to improve the performance of the MR damper.
