Ventilatory support for veterinary patients is an endeavor that involves the entire medical-care team. Technicians play an important role in alerting the team when a patient is likely to need ventilation. In addition, the technician plays a vital rolein the monitoring, managing, and reassessment of ventilated patients. With all of this responsibility, it goes without saying that we must maintain an acceptable level of understanding and preparedness to facilitate the smooth, seamless care of the ventilated patient. Our understanding must include the ability to decide when a patient needs ventilatory support, to evaluate the success of our therapy, and to make necessary changes based on fluctuations in patients' needs.
