UNCOMMON MANIFESTATIONS OF COMMON VETERINARY PARASITES

Veterinarians and the pet-owning public have become increasingly aware of the importance of parasite control in their pets. Topical and systemic parasite preventatives and parasiticides have greatly reduced many of the preventable diseases from whichdogs and cats suffer. Despite improvements in understanding of parasite biology and continued refinement in pharmacologic approaches to parasite control, there are still many pets who end up ill as a result of parasite infestation. These are usually theresult of failed compliance, improper or inconsistent use of products, or veterinarians failing to communicate effectively with clients about the importance of a parasite-control program for both their pets' and their own health. While most veterinariansare familiar with the typical and common presentations of veterinary parasites seen in their geographic area, occasionally parasite infections will manifest with unusual signs or atypical presentations.
