MANAGEMENT OF THE POST ARREST PATIENT

Animals that have survived cardiopulmonary arrest and have been successfully resuscitated are extremely critical and unstable. The likelihood of re-arrest was reported in one study to be 65-68% for dogs and 22-38% for cats, and usually occurred within 4 hours of the initial arrest. Management of the post-arrest patient requires vigilant monitoring and the technical expertise of dedicated critical care personnel.
