Proactive maintenance using condition monitoring, diagnostics and prognostics at dofasco

DOFASCO is a leading North American steel producer located in Hamilton. Ontario Canada. Product lines include hot rolled, cold rolled, galvanized and tinplate flat folled steels, as well as tubular products. DOFASCO's wide range of steel products is sold to customers in the automotive, construction, steel distribution, packaging, pipe and tube, manufacturing and appliance industries. Dofasco is currently organized into twelve Business Units. The Coke making Business Unit is the upstream supplier to the Iron Business Unit while Steelmaking is the downstream cusomer. The Iron Business Unit Maintenance department has evolved from Run to Failure maintenance in the early seventies through Time Based maintenance (PM programs including Lubrication) in the late eighties. In the early nineties the Iron Business Unit progressed to COndition Based Maintenance -CBM, This approach, with its associated technolgoies, is being utilized to improve equipment diagnostics while prognostics tools are fueling the next wave of the development effort. This paper discusses the maintenance processes existing in Iron and the results achieved to data. The future direction of maintenance, in the Iron Business Unit, will be examined.
