A gun barrel system was found to have severe corrosion problems inside the gun barrel tube. This corrosion adversely affects the proper funcitoning of the gun. The colurit is the intrusion of salt water into the head space seating surfaces. The head space seating surface lies between the barrel tube and the barrel liner of the gun system. During actual operations the gun barrel heats from 20 degrees centigrade to 300 degrees centigrade after a number of round bursts. The barrel is cooled with a sea water flush followed by fresh water. Water is used inthis system as a heat transfer medium and corrosion cannot be tolerated. Most guns still contain sea water or firesh water after the flushing procedure. They are not completely drained. This study was focused on investigating the quality of the barrel plating and base metal. A number of samples were taken from the corrodedc tubes for metallurgical and chemical analysis.
