Oven Window Design Considerations to Meet Cool Door Requirements and Save Energy

Oven windows are a desirable aesthetic and functional enhancement to the door, but are responsible for increased heat loss and higher outer surface temperatures if not properly designed. This paper develops the thermal resistance model for the window, describing the performance of various glass products available in the market, leading to several popular configurations that are currently used in the Industry. Guidelines for the design of efficient windows capable of meeting cool door standards are discussed. The incorporation of natural convection in the window cavity to insure that self-cleaning ovens meet outer surface temperatures is included in the model. The increased energy loss due to this convection component is calculated, and suggested enhancements include a shutter to block this convection path during normal cooking operation.
