Diagnosis and treatment of placentitis early in the course of the disease process is essential to the success of producing a full-term viable foal. Early diagnosis can be achieved through routine survey of the transrectal combined utero-placental thickness (CUPT) during late-term gestation of Thoroughbred mares in clinical practice. Early detection of placental failure in the mare has been deemed essential for the successful management and treatment of mares affected with placentitis.
