In this paper the achievable accuracy of a system consisting of decentralised electrical drives, connected to a central control unit via a fieldbus, is investigated. A quick overview of fieldbus systems for electrical drives is given, a simple model for cyclic fieldbus systems is shown. Parameters influencing the accuracy of electrical shaft applications, namely synchronisation accuracy and interpolation, are discussed and key issues for determining and designing accuracy and optimum performance of a fieldbus synchronised drive system are identified. It is proven that only a fully synchronous design can lead to best performance, and that good interpolation between stages with different sampling rate is essential.
