Lubricants play an important role in metal forming operations by reducing friction, increasing tool life and affecting the surface finish of formed components. Friction and surface conditions are affected by the surface topography of the workpiece and tools, but sources of information on this topic are relatively sparse. This paper investigates the friction behaviour and surface topography using various lubricants and different workpiece surface textures in ring compression tests.
