Crustal-Scale Shearing, Magmatism and the Development of Deformation Structures: An Example from Santa Catarina (Southern Brazil)

Macro- and microstructures of granitoids from the Porto Belo region (Santa Catarina, Brazil) fro a good basis for unravelling the late-Proterozoic history of the Southern Brazilian Shear Belt, a crustal-scale structure formed in a post-collisional orogenic setting. These syntectonic igneous rocks offer an excellent example of the close interaction of successive intrusions along an active crustal discontinuity, and of the relationship between melt emplacement and deformation. In addition, the importance of such melts for the large-scale behavior of the continental crust can be investigated.
