In the central trough of Cundinamarca nearly 10,000 m of sediment were deposited during the Cretaceous. To record the development of the Cundinamarca Basin, samples form the adjacent areas of the Tablazo-Magdalena Subbasin in the north and the Upper Magdalena Valley Subbasins in the south were also studied. The investigated profiles cover a span of time from Barremian to Maastrichtian. The stratigraphical division was determined by ammoites, foraminifera and palynomorphs. Additional sedimentological and organic geochemical investigations allowed conclusions about the origin of the black shales.
