Groundwater resource developments in the Northern Territory, Australia

In the mid 1970's, the Northern Territory commenced a program of work aimed at providing towns and communities with a secure water supply. Due to the long "dry season" in the north and the aridity of the south, water supplies were sourced from groundwater. This was essentially completed by the end of the 1980's. In the 1990's, the emphasis of the groundwater program shifted to become the identification of groundwater resources with a significant regional development potential (eg. for irrigated agriculture). This change resulted in a work program being developed that was directed at providing relevant, up-to-date information on the groundwater resources of the Northern Territory.
