A problem with vibration above the acceptance criteria (2.0 mils pk - pk) for a new installation occurred during the initial operation of a turbine generator. The unit vibration increased from less then 1.0 mil pk - pk displacement with the unit unexcited; to 4.66 mils pk - pk at 25percent load. This paper will deal with the analysis and balancing of a thermally induced imbalance in a small co - generation plant. The author will generally describe what needs to be done when balancing a thermal problem to acceptable vibration limits. The static couple method of balancing will be used along with plots of the thermal movement. The author describes in detail the test plan along with the data analysis.
