Understanding the process by which a product generates and radiates sound is fundamental in designing products with better sound quality in mind. In consumer products, such as vacuum cleaners, there are air-borne and structure borne sources each with their own transmission paths. By quantifying the contribution of the different sources and their respective transmission paths it is possible to identify the appropriate engineering solutions required to control the sound. This paper focuses on the experimental methods that can adequately characterise the structure borne source strength of a motor. The in-situ blocked force characterisation technique has been shown to be capable of providing an independent source strength quantity for relatively large machines and assemblies. An aim of this paper is to assess the suitability of using the in-situ blocked force technique for characterising a radially mounted motor in a lightweight assembly.
