An important aspect in the manufacturing of laser welded blanks is providing an edge which is square and straight along the entire weld length. This is because the edge quality of the blanks being joined can influence process performance and weld bead shape. There are a number of processes available to prepare the edges of blanks for laser welding. Each produces unique edge characteristics that can influence the formation of certain defects or particular weld bead geometry. Other factors, such as shielding gas position and shielding gas flow, further contribute to the overall performance of aluminum laser welds for a given edge condition.
