Alsike clover (Trifolium hybridum) and red clover (Trifolium pratense) poisonings in horses

Plant poisonings are still a major concern for most livestock producers in North America. Some of the classic poisonous plants are found scattered throughout the United States, while other toxic plants are found in relatively restricted areas. In thePacific Northwest, alsike clover poisoning is a relatively common problem that is seen by equine owners. A less commonly recognized disease in horses, similar in clinical appearance, is associated with red clover ingestion. Recognition by veterinariansand horse owners of this potential problem is critical to curbing its occurrence, and enabling individuals to employ management strategies to prevent or eliminate this problem.
