Surface enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy is a quite efficient technique for the system that has weak Raman intensity, especially in the study of thin films. Selforganized monolayer at interface is an interesting and important aspect in making patterned surfaces with functions such as information storage and photoswitching. In the investigation to the morphology of surface patterning, hexadecoic acid hydrogenbonded with 4-[2-(4-pyridinal)ethenyl]pyridine were employed to form organized monolayer in which photoisomerization can take place through conformation change of the C=C double bond in irradiation. The complex is centrally symmetric in solid state, and two hexadecoic acid molecules are almost perpendicular bonded to stilbazole in the opposite side with each other. However the π-a thermal-equivalent curve indicated a quite well monolayer can be built up. A novel phenomenon was found in comparing surface structure of the complex and stilbazole on silver substrate. Here, we summarize the SERS investigation of the hydrogen-bonded complex in organized monolayer with near-infrared FT-Raman.
