The organization of self-assembled monolayers on metal surfaces provides a practical approach for fabricating interfaces with a well-defined thickness and structure. The most widely studied and well-characterized systems include alkanethiols, dialkyl sulfides, and dialkyl disulfides self-assembled on golod and silver surfaces. In line with this, aliphatic dithiols are usually adsorbed on silver as dithiolates by forming two Ag-S bonds. Dithiol molecules have been claimed onthe contrary to adsorb on gold as monothioloate by forming one signle Au-S covalent bond~(1). Moreover, Kohili et al.~(2) recently reported that uop to eight covelently attached layers could be formed on gold from solution phase (alpha,omega)-aliphatic dithiols. The linking chemistry between layers was claimed to be the oxidative formation of a sulfur-sulfur bond. The adsorption characteristics of aliphatic dithiols on gold are in fact dependent on the kind of solvent as well as the concentration and the duration of the self-assembly.
