For the power supplies fo high performance CPUs, synchronous rectified switching regulator is more efficient than conventional buck converter. A synchronous pulse width modulation (PWM) chip is proposed for Pentium II & III CPUs, which integrates the control, output adjustment, output monitoring and protection functions of switching regulator. Hspice simulation shows that it has high efficiency, high precision, fast transient response and small start-up overshoot. The chip is successfully fabricated in 1.7 mum BiCMOS process and a synchronous rectified switching regulator based on this chip is constructed. Test result shows that its performance conforms to Intel's VRM8.2 guidelines.
