This paper describes a design of haptic data cache control for the Texture Display system. The cache control enables a high-speed updating presentation crucial for haptic displays. The design places a haptic data cache on a shared-memory connecting two computers in order to provide a fast local feedback loop at a device control computer of the Texture Display. The finger velocity of user's exploring motion and the processing time of a host computer were measured before planning parameters of the cache control. A margin size and a spatial density, as control parameters, were adaptively selected to serve a variable finger velocity. Discrimination experiments were performed regarding two sets of texture samples. The results showed that the adaptive cache control presented haptic textures effectively to the subjects at both high and low velocity ranges of finger motion.
