MYCOPLASMA HYOSYNOVIAE SEROPREVALENCE IN 104 DANISH FINISHER HERDS

Infection with Mycoplasma hyosynoviae induces arthritis and lameness among growing-finishing pigs in most swine producing countries (1) and in Denmark Mycoplasma arthritis is an important cause of locomotor problems (2). Antibodies against M. hyosynoviae have been shown in pigs after experimental infection and in field cases (1,3). A monoclonal ELISA for M. hyosynoviae antibodies has recently been developed (4). In Danish herds with outbreak of mycoplasma arthritis, active immunization against M. hyosynoviae has been found in most finishing pigs by this ELISA (2). The aim of this study was to describe the within-herd prevalence of serum antibodies to M. hyosynoviae and possible association with reported disease problems in finishing pigs.
