SEROLOGICAL PREVALENCE OF LAWSONIA INTRACELLULARIS ACROSS UK AND IRISH PIG HERDS

A survey of the incidence of porcine proliferative enteropathy (PPE) in finishing pigs has been described using clinical signs (1), gross pathology of the ileum and large intestine at slaughter checks (2) and shedding of Lawsonia intracellularis usingfaecal PCR (3). These methods are relatively insensitive and do not accurately reflect the true incidence of exposure to Lawsonia intracellularis (4). In this study the sero-prevalence of Lawsonia intracellularis was determined across England, Scotlandand Ireland.
