THE EVALUATION OF THE BOMMELI ELISA SARCOPTEST FOR SARCOPTES SCABEIVAR. SUIS AND THE PREVALENCE OF MANGE IN ONTARIO, CANADA

Microscopic examination of skin scrapings remains a standard procedure for the diagnosis of Sarcoptes scabei var. suis. This method has a low sensitivity. The collection of skin scrapings also involves significant animal discomfort and the results canbe affected by inter-personnel variation in sampling.. Recently, Bommeli Ag has developed a diagnostic test kit for this parasite utilizing ELISA technology (1). The objectives of this study were to 1. evaluate this kit under North American conditions and 2. to determine the prevalence of sarcoptic mange in Ontario swine herds. This study was conducted between March and June 1999 on Canadian and American swine units.
