THE NATIONAL PIG HEALTH MONITORING SCHEME - SOME NOTEWORTHY DISEASE TRENDS

The National Pig Health Monitoring Scheme (PHMS) (1) incorporates four Australian states (South Australia, Western Australia, Victoria and Queensland). Slaughter inspection results are entered into PigMON 3~(TM) (Pig Research and Development Corporation database program), which generates slaughter inspection reports and epidemiological reports. Compatibility of data between states and inspectors is maintained by QA exercises which target interpretation and scoring of lesions. This paper reports on some of the recent disease trends in Australian herds. Selected epidemiological reports were generated using PigMON 3~(TM), and the data exported to Excel spreadsheets and graphed. Graphs were analysed and trends further explored by generation of more specific epidemiological reports targeting areas of interest.
