EVALUATING THE EFFICACY OF DORAMECTIN AND IVERMECTIN AGAINST SARCOPTIC MANGE IN PIGS

The avermectin class of compounds are reported to be the most efficacious acaricides used in the treatment of sarcoptic mange (1), but the relative efficacy of different avermectins has received little study. This study reports on the efficacy of ivermectin and doramectin in treating and preventing mange. Experiment one: A group of 180 3-4 week old naturally infested pigs were weighed and examined and randomly allocated to one of three treatment groups based on age, sex and mange lesions. Pigs were housed in groups of five in pens with solid walls. Twelve groups were injected subcutaneously (SC) with (Ivomec~(R), Merial Limited) (lml/33kg); 12 groups were injected intramuscularly (IM) with Dectomax~(R), Pfizer) (lml/33kg); 12 groups remained unmedicated. Pigs were assessed for mange on treatment day -1 and 16 and 121. Assessment included skin and ear lesion severity and calculation of a rubbing index (RI). Material collected from ears was examined as previously described (2). Average dermatitis scores (ADS) were calculated for each group at slaughter (2). Growth rates and feed:gain ratios were calculated from Day 70 to Day 121.
