ULTRASONOGRAPHIC STUDY OF THE LEFT ABDOMINAL REGION OF THE PIG AS A NONINVASIVE MONITORING OF CHRONIC HYPERPLASTIC ENTEROPATHIES IN SWINE (ILEITIS)

The use of ultrasound in veterinary medicine is daily growing. Ultrasonography is a noninvasive way to clinically evaluate patients of different animal specie. In swine industry, the use of ultrasonography has gained great value in reproduction to monitore ovarian activity of sows and to detect early pregnancy (1,2,3,4). Nevertheless, little use of ultrasound have been clinically applied up to now. The literature is scanty and the potential of ultrasound clinically in pigs is very large. The presentstudy was designed to: 1. To study by ultrasound the abdominal cavity to identify the viscera and best way to evaluate the abdomen. 2. To assess the abdominal cavity in pigs over 9 weeks old to monitore the peritoneum and viscera with emphasis in the small and large bowel integrity to differentiate from chronic abnormalities of the intestinal mucosa such ileitis.
