Today's coatings' industry is faced with the challenges of globalization, fierce competitiveness and an increasingly sophisticated customer base. For more than fifty years, solid epoxy resin / high viscosity polyamide coatings have served the ambient cure epoxy coatings industry well; however, newer curing agent technologies are finding wide-spread use in specialty coating applications. To succeed in today's industry, raw material suppliers must offer value-added products that allow coating suppliers to satisfy their high growth customer needs. This work presents the performance of several unique amine-functional curing agents designed for specialty epoxy coatings. Binder systems for low temperature cure epoxy/amine coatings, high-performance waterborne coatings and flexible epoxy/polyamide coatings are discussed in this work. Based on the performance results, and positive industry feedback, amine-functional curing agents bring potentially unique performance advantages to ambient-cure epoxy coatings.
