In Steel industry, converting coal to cokes, coal tar and gas (COG) is an effective process. However because of recent issues associate with environment, green house effect and carcinogenic, adding higher value to coal tar as chemical material has various limitations. The light part of coal tar can be fully utilized as fuel, solvent and chemical materials, the heavy part of coal tar is utilized only as carbon black and pitch cokes electrode material and others. Unfortunately utilizing or adding value to the middle molecular weight part of coal tar is quite difficult at this time. Based on the above issues, I had reviewed that oligomer of polybenzenoid chemicals can be an extremely useful and effective product and can be overcome problems that coal tar composition has, such as environmental and carcinogenic problems. In this report, synthesis of naphthalene oligomer and these utilization from coal tar are explained.
