Liquid crystalline properties of fluorinated ether and thioether compounds

Fluorinated liquid crystalline (LC) compounds have received much scientific and industrical interest as a new class of LC materials. The LC compounds having the terminal fluoroalkyl groups have been studied and these compounds have been found to facilitate a formation of smecctic phase. In particular, it was since the discovery of fluoro-benzene LC compounds such as 1,2-difluoro-4[trans-4-(trans-4-alkylcyclohexyl) cyclohexyl]benzene by Chisso Co. groups that the fluorinated LC compounds move into the limelight as the new class of LC display materials. Three fluoro-benzene LC compounds showed excellent voltage holding ratios with good electro-optical properties. On the other hand, the LC compounds having the terminal -CF_3 or -OCF_3 have been reported, as good LC materials for the display devices. In this conference, we review our recent works on two types of fluorinated ether and thioether compounds.
