Mechanical performance of newly developedβ type titanium alloys for biomedical use

β type titanium alloys have more excellent biocompatibility because their moduli of elasticity are much less than those of α and α+β type biomedical titanium alloys such as Ti-6Al-4V ELI. New β type titanium alloys composed of non-toxic elements with lower moduli of elasticity, high strength and excellent corrosion resistance were designed in this study. The laboratory size ingots were produced using by tri-arc furnace. The practical size ingots of Ti-Nb-Ta-Zr system alloy were also produced. The tensile tests, friction wear tests and measurement of modulus of elasticity and evaluation of cytotoxicity were conducted in order to investigate the mechanical and biomedical performance of designed alloys. The results of these findings and the potential for these designed new β type titanium alloys for orthopedic applications are discussed.
