摘要

NALC (North American Landscape Characterization) MSS data sets were analyzed to evaluate forest change over a 18-year period from 1973 to 1991 within the northern Rocky Mountain Region. The analysis focussed on changes due to past forest management practices and natural forest disturbances on a regional level. NDVI image subtraction and red band subtraction were compared to evaluate vegetation changes throughout the study region, which comprised Idaho, western Montana, and northwestern Wyoming. A change detection process was reviewed and provided broad-area, small-scale quantitative data on forest pattern changes useful to resource managers. This type of study helps to distinguish the effects of regional versus local management strategies on the surrounding ecosystem. Monitoring and evaluating changes in patterns of forested landscapes provides insight for future landscape management planning.
