This paper focuses on one of three lidar research projects in the Department of Forestry, Mississippi State University. Multi-return lidar data were collected in 1998 and 1999 over research sites in Washington, Idaho, and Mississippi. High-resolution, multi-spectral imagery have also been collected over the sites for assessment of stand tree species composition. Detailed measurements of terrain, tree canopy and understory have been made in the Washington site, and early results of comparisons with the lidar measurements will be presented along with progress to date in the development of a computer application for 3-dimensional visualization of remotely sensed data.
