Systems Engineering VPE Data Schema: PDM integration of a functional product description model in SysML

This paper presents the application of the Systems Engineering (SE) data schema for Virtual Product Engineering (VPE) in a Product Data Management (PDM) system. This data schema has been proposed to enable the management of a socalled Functional Product Description (FPD) model, created at the early engineering stages, in PDM. The main question the paper helps to answer is how a model-based Functional Product Description can be integrated in an interdisciplinary product development process. PDM systems form the core of a PLM concept and integrate all relevant product development information in an engineering enterprise. With the use of a specially defined data schema (the SE VPE data schema), early descriptive product models (FPD) can be integrated in a PDM backbone. First results are presented in this paper.
