Ballistic Performance of Hot Isostatically Pressed (HIped) Ti-Based Targets

Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) is one of the most efficient techniques used to produce high quality materials from powders. Nevertheless, there is a shortage of data on high-strain-rate performance of such materials. In this paper, the results of penetration test (tungsten rod, velocity 886-960 m/s, diameter D=4.98 mm, L/D=10) with solid and porous composite samples of Ti-6Al-4V alloy with different microstructures (Widmanstatten pattern and equiaxed) are reported. Milling of rapidly solidified Ti-6Al-4V powders prior to HIPing ensured the equiaxed final microstructure with increased compressive yield strength and microhardness (1180 MPa and 337 kgf/mm~2 correspondingly). Interstitial content was suitable for armor applications. Penetration depths for HIPed samples (14-15 mm) were smaller than that for standard Ti-6Al-4V alloy MIL-T-9047G (18-20 mm). Additionally, the wide craters in HIPed materials are distinctly different from the narrow craters in the standard materials. The results demonstrate the applicability of HIPing for the development of composite armor based on Ti-alloys.
