In this paper, a comparative analysis of the area backscattering coefficients s_A derived from acoustics and nets is presented. The SA values were integrated within a layer of 2-m thickness (0.5 m off the seabed) and correction made for the acoustic deadzone. This layer was comparable to the headline height of 2 m on average. The net data were converted to the equivalent area backscattering coefficients, s_(A(atch)). Results showed that the two SA estimates were equivalent in a sense that they both clustered around the 1-1 correspondence line. Substantial variations are observed however, which may involve uncertainties in target strength, net efficiency and spatial distribution of targets
