In order to meet the stringent quality of coke in SAIL, a systematic blend formulation method was developed through detailed pilot oven tests on coals/blends coupled with industrial scale investigations. The investigations clearly indicated the predominance of rank and ash content of the coal blend on M10 and CSR. It was found that coke with isotropic carbon content of more than 35 percent generally had CSR values less than 55. Correlation equations were developed to predict coke quality, which included ash content, rank, fluidity, crushing level and coking period. The results are being utilised in SAIL plants for selection and evaluation of coals and formulation of coal blends.
